How to Enjoy the Process More Than Reaching the Goal.
It’s so easy to get swept up in the glamour of our big goals that sometimes the process of getting there becomes rote, tiresome or even discouraging.
Staying in love with the process will keep you on the path and doing the every day things to move the needle towards your goal.
By definition, process means “a series of actions or steps taken in order to achieve a particular end”.
So process in your business or life includes all the little tasks you do each day and week to get to where you want to go.
Most of our time on planet Earth is spent in the process. We are process.
Reaching goals is a short lived experience that is briefly celebrated until we move on to the next thing. That’s why falling in love with this time is more important then in actually reaching any goal.
Below I outline 6 ways to fall in love with the process.
1) Fall in Love With The Process by Discovering What You Can Love About The Process.
If you find yourself getting frustrated by your pace, rate of progress, or the tiresome to-do list, stop and see what you can love.
How to love the process?
How can you make certain tasks more enjoyable?
Sometimes this is as easy as staying present with your breath (mindfulness). Other times this means creating a support system for yourself. Dread going to the gym? Can you bring a buddy? Can you queue up 10 of your favorite songs?
2) Fall in Love With The Process by Creating a Checklist System.
Creating a checklist or reward system for completing tasks is trains your brain fr productivity. How can you reward yourself for doing the daily and weekly work? Ideas I love here are creating checkboxes to X off, using the sticky-note to-do list GO HERE to read the full Sticky Note To-Do List Blog.
I am also loving the Ink + Volt Dashboard planner, in addition to my Passion Planner. It has a
The Dashboard has lots of areas for checking boxes. This is simple and super fun! The daily tracker at the bottom is my favorite.
3) Fall in Love With The Process by Accepting Where You Are
Accepting where you are can be one of the hardest concepts to practice, especially for goal-driven individuals.
We all think we just want to jump to the finish line, and get to where we’re going yesterday.
Slow down, stop, and realize this is an endless process. Once you reach a goal, you’re only going to make another one and be thrown into the process once again.
Regardless of how you feel on a daily basis, where you are is perfect. Set yourself up for good emotional management by allowing for any feelings and doing the work regardless of your emotions.
It’s ok to not feel great! And it’s ok to feel great.
You should not be any further along than you are today.
4) Fall in Love With The Process by Asking Yourself Questions About Your Process.
Cultivating curiosity opens up new ways of thinking and helps you appreciate what you’ve created.
Ask yourself questions lik:
How can this be fun?
How can I keep this highly engaging?
Example: focus music, a checklist or reward system
How and when do I work the best?
Example: morning, afternoon, evening. Allow yourself to work when it’s best for you. With or without music. Solo or with people around.
How can I support myself in the process?
Example: create a mastermind, get an accountability buddy, block my time for tasks and defend it, create prime conditions for work, take care of myself by eating, drinking and sleeping well.
How can I make my process work for me?
Example: Discover what key habits to add or change. Discover what motivates you. Find out what derails you.
5) Fall in Love With The Process by Tracking Your Growth.
We all want big wins as soon as possible. But in reality success comes overtime in small wins often after small fails.
How can you track track your wins?
How can you celebrate your growth on a regular basis?
Implement a weekly or monthly check in system to see your growth. You could do this by tracking:
Income
Follows
Likes
Email subscriber growth
Etc.
Remember though, business is not always up. There are peaks, plateaus and valleys. Don’t let plateaus and valleys discourage you.
6) Fall in Love With The Process by Getting Comfortable Failing or Bleeding a Little Every Day.
In the 3 hour long YouTube video by Naval on How to Get Rich, he talks about the importance of becoming at ease with regular failures.
Haven’t listened? Go listen after you finish this blog.
Becoming comfortable with failing is a pre-requisite for winning. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking your business or life should be success after success (although success does happen regularly too!).
Part of being successful is learning how to fail regularly, learning from it and then moving on.
A Japanese proverb I love sums it up by saying, “Fall down 7 times, get up 8”
